Configuring audio settings from scratch is intimidating for most users. A 10-band parametric EQ with multiband compression and a look-ahead limiter is a powerful system, but knowing exactly which frequencies to boost, which compression ratio to use, and how much gain to apply requires audio engineering knowledge that most listeners simply do not have. This is the paradox of professional audio tools in a consumer extension: the power is there, but the learning curve prevents most people from using it effectively.
Hearably's Community Presets solve this by crowdsourcing audio expertise. Any Hearably user can save their current EQ, compression, volume boost, and noise gate settings as a named preset and share it with the community. Other users can browse these presets by category, see download counts and ratings, preview the settings before applying, and activate any preset with a single click. The result is a living library of audio configurations tuned by real people for real listening scenarios.
The preset system is organized into intuitive categories: Music genres (hip-hop bass boost, classical concert hall, jazz club warmth, electronic clarity), content types (podcast voice clarity, ASMR sensitivity, gaming spatial awareness, movie dialogue fix), headphone models (AirPods Pro compensation, Sony WH-1000XM5 tuning, HD 650 reference correction), and platform-specific (YouTube quiet fix, Netflix dialogue boost, Spotify loudness match). Each category surfaces presets that the community has validated through actual use and positive ratings.
For audio enthusiasts, the community presets are a starting point for customization. Apply a highly-rated preset, then tweak the EQ bands, compression settings, and volume to match your specific preferences and hardware. Save your modified version as a new community preset and the cycle continues — each iteration building on the collective knowledge of the community. This is how professional audio engineers work: they start from a known good configuration and refine from there.
Privacy is maintained throughout. Presets are anonymous by default — only the preset name, description, category, and settings data are shared. No account name, browsing history, or listening data is included. Users can optionally attach a display name to their presets for recognition. The preset data itself is just a JSON object of EQ frequencies, gain values, compressor thresholds, and ratios — no audio data, no personal information, and no tracking.

How Community Presets Are Stored and Applied
A Hearably preset is a JSON object containing the complete state of the DSP chain: 10 EQ band frequencies and gain values, 3 compressor thresholds and ratios, crossover frequencies, volume boost level, noise gate sensitivity, stereo width, and Ad Guard threshold. This object is typically 500-800 bytes — compact enough to store thousands of presets without significant storage impact.
When a user shares a preset, it is uploaded to Hearably's backend (Cloudflare Workers + D1 database) with metadata: name, description, category tags, and a timestamp. The backend assigns a unique ID and the preset enters a community index that is searchable and sortable by category, rating, and download count. When another user browses presets, the extension fetches paginated results from the API, displaying preset cards with name, description, category, rating, and a preview of the EQ curve.
Applying a preset triggers a parameter crossfade: all DSP parameters ramp from their current values to the preset values over 50ms using linearRampToValueAtTime(). This prevents audible clicks or pops that would occur with instantaneous parameter changes. The crossfade applies to all parameters simultaneously — EQ gains, compressor thresholds, volume level, and stereo width all transition smoothly in parallel. The applied preset is stored in chrome.storage.sync so it persists across browser sessions and syncs across devices (for logged-in users). Free users can save up to 3 custom presets locally; Pro users get unlimited presets and community sharing.
How to get the best audio on Community Audio Presets
Browse by headphone model for optimized EQ
Many community presets are tuned for specific headphone models — AirPods Pro, Sony WH-1000XM5, Sennheiser HD 650, and more. These presets compensate for the specific frequency response of each headphone, resulting in flatter, more accurate, or more enjoyable sound than generic EQ settings.
Sort by download count for proven presets
Presets with thousands of downloads and high ratings have been validated by real users. Start with the most popular preset in your category and adjust from there. High download count is a strong signal that the settings work well for most people.
Use platform-specific presets as a starting point
Community presets tagged for YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, or Twitch are tuned for the specific audio characteristics of those platforms. A Netflix preset accounts for the 5.1 downmix problem. A YouTube preset compensates for -14 LUFS normalization. These platform-specific optimizations save you from configuring everything from scratch.
Preview before applying
Tap the preview button to see the EQ curve and compression settings before applying a preset. This helps you understand what the preset does and whether it aligns with your listening preferences before changing your current configuration.
Save your tweaks as a new community preset
Found a community preset that is close but not perfect? Adjust the EQ or compression to your taste, then save your modified version as a new community preset. Your refinement helps other users with similar preferences find their ideal configuration faster.
Create presets for specific content creators
If a particular YouTuber or podcaster consistently has audio issues (too quiet, too much bass, sibilant), create and share a preset named for that creator. Other fans of the same content will find it and benefit from your tuning work.
Free users get 3 saved presets plus all factory presets
Even on the free tier, you can save up to 3 custom presets (locally) and use all 6 factory presets. Pro users get unlimited saved presets, community sharing and rating, and presets that sync across devices via chrome.storage.sync.

Frequently asked questions
What is a community preset?
A community preset is a saved configuration of all Hearably DSP settings — EQ bands, compression, volume boost, noise gate, and stereo width — created by a Hearably user and shared publicly. Other users can browse, rate, and apply these presets with one click.
Can I use community presets on the free tier?
You can browse and apply community presets on the free tier, limited by the free tier feature set (120% max boost, 3-band EQ). Pro presets that use 10-band EQ or high boost levels will apply with the free-tier limits. To access the full preset settings, upgrade to Pro.
Is my personal data shared with presets?
No. Presets are anonymous by default. Only the preset name, description, category, and DSP settings are shared. No account name, browsing history, listening data, or personal information is included. You can optionally add a display name.
How do I create and share a preset?
Configure your Hearably settings to your liking, then click Save Preset in the extension. Give it a name, description, and category tags. Toggle Share with Community to make it public. The preset is uploaded to the Hearably cloud and becomes available to all users.
Can presets harm my audio or speakers?
No. All preset values are constrained within Hearably's safe operating ranges. The look-ahead limiter prevents any configuration from producing output above -0.45 dBFS. No preset can cause distortion, clipping, or speaker damage regardless of its settings.
Do presets sync across my devices?
For Pro users, yes. Saved presets are stored in chrome.storage.sync which synchronizes across all Chrome instances signed into the same Google account. Free users' presets are stored locally in chrome.storage.local on a single device.
How are presets rated?
After applying a community preset, you can rate it on a 5-star scale. Ratings are aggregated and displayed alongside download counts. Highly-rated presets surface higher in search results and category listings.
Can I find presets for my specific headphones?
Yes. Many community presets are tagged with specific headphone models. Search for your headphone model (e.g., "AirPods Pro", "WH-1000XM5", "HD 650") to find presets tuned for that hardware's specific frequency response characteristics.
